The Thousand Islands I

Volume I

Ian Coristine's love affair with the 1000 Islands began when he discovered the area on a random flight in 1992. It was a life changing event. He became an island owner 3 years later and soon realized that several very unlikely ingredients had converged to provide an unlikely opportunity. Living six months a year in the "assignment" with a float plane, boat, camera and the experience to use them effectively, Coristine realized it was not only an opportunity but perhaps even an obligation to share the "privileged view" that he enjoys low from above.

In the summer of 2002, his first book, The 1000 Islands was released. It quickly sold out and by 2005 had gone through three large printings, well over 30,000 copies, all in the immediate region, by far the most successful book about the place ever published. That book became a collector's item commanding prices as high as $400.

A small quantity of these books was recently discovered and they are now being offered at a cost of $200 per signed copy for those who may wish to complete their collection.

The River has always been a hodge-podge of places in my mind with no real understanding of the layout of the islands from the lake and on down river. Sooo, early this morning I looked at each picture, read the caption and found its numbered place on the map. It  was a terrific experience.  I gained a much better understanding of the wonder of the entire jewel. Also, I was struck with the great amount of work that you had to do to amass, collate and refine the words, pictures and explanations into a book that flows so well. You have brought the "River" to us in a way that has never been done before. You are to be congratulated. When ever I need a "River" fix I just pick up my little book and I am there. Also, My computer screen when I boot up displays the picture from your island looking upriver with the chairs in the near foreground. I have named the screen " Come and sit with me my friend, let the cares of the world dissolve, we will leave renewed".

Dear Rennie,

It's beautiful to see your note.
Thank you for organizing our Wilbur reunion at the 1000 Islands.
It was an sensational time for us all. The "River" is home to many Wilburs. My first ride on the St. Lawrence River was in 1968 with Dad [Warren A. Wilbur II] my Mom, Joslyn, and Mark. I visited again in 1972 on my honeymoon with my one and only William H. Callahan, who fell in love with the "River" too! Returning in 2010 was even more exciting. Touring Boldt Castle [pictured on Ian's book above] took my breath away. Visiting Richard MacSherry & Mary Wilbur MacSherry's home was even more breathtaking. Thank you for all of it. I see "The very best of Ian Coristine's 1000 Islands" everyday on Granny & Grand Pops's bookshelf and turn to a new page often.

Thank you Ian Coristine's for your fabulous views of the "1000 Islands."

Love, Connie
Constance Marie Wilbur Callahan
